The Mysteries of the Mummy

In this little podcast series we embark on an archaeological expedition to uncover the history of one of the great movie monsters - the Mummy. In these shows you'll discover the early tales looks to Egypt for thrills and chills, the conception of reanimating mummies and how they dragged their shufflingfeet from the page on the silver screen.

01 - Ancient Lore
Mr Moon begins an epic journey through the history of a horror icon - the Mummy! In this episode, we journey to ancient Egypt to unwrap the mysteries of mummification, unlock the secrets of the dead, discover the truth about tomb curses, and encounter legends of bandaged ghouls!

02 - TALES OF THE TOMB
In the second part of our Mummy saga, Mr Jim Moon explores the development and evolution of Egyptian horrors in fiction and literature. We encounter ancient princesses, reincarnated lovers, dire curses from the tomb and, of course, the reanimated dead!

03 - RADIO THOTH
In this episode, we take a side-step into the world of old time radio to sample a variety of Egyptological thrills. Firstly we have an adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tale The Ring of Thoth presented by Escape! and then hear the tale of the Living Mummy from The World Adventurers Club. And finally we round off with a spine-chilling tale of opening an ancient tomb in Whence You Came from the brilliant Quiet Please.

04 - SILENT SCREAMS
In this episode we follow the course of mummy stories in early 20th century weird and genre fiction, with tales of strange curses and evil immortals! And then we discover how he shambled onto the silver screen in the silent era in a surprising number of early outings!

05 - IMHOTEP LIVES
Mr Jim Moon takes on Boris Karloff's evil immortal mummy Imhotep with a full commentary track for the 1932 Universal horror classic The Mummy!

06 - LOT NO.249 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
This week we gather round the cosy fireside of the Great Library of Dreams to hear a classic tale of mummy terror - Lot No. 249 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a story that would provide the template for many a mummy movie...

07 - THE COMING OF KHARIS
In this episode, Mr Jim Moon travels back into Universal horror history to witness the birth of a new movie monster, Kharis the Mummy! We take an in-depth look at The Mummy's Hand (1940), a movie that not only kick-started the Universal Mummy franchise but was to have a huge influence on all subsequent mummy movies!

08 - THE CHRONICLES OF KHARIS
This week we investigate the further adventures of Universal Mummy Kharis! Now played by the great Lon Chaney Jnr., Mr Jim Moon breaks into The Mummy's Tomb (1942), encounters The Mummy's Ghost (1944) and falls prey to The Mummy's Curse (1944). We also regrettably discover what occurs when Abbott & Costello Meet The Mummy (1955)

09 - RADIO THOTH II
We tune in once again to the world of old time radio to sample some further audio terrors with an Egyptological flavour! In this episode, Mr Jim Moon presents the eerie tale of an excavated sarcophagus in We Dug It Up from Arch Oboler's Lights Out, and then visit the Hall of Fantasy to encounter the curse on The Golden Bracelet of Amoniris

10 - PHARAOHS IN THE '50s
In this episode, we discover what the Mummy was doing in the years between the end of the Universal series and the dawn of the Hammer cycle. We track down appearances in popular culture, talk about the mummies found lurking in the infamous 50s horror comics, and discuss two mummy movies from that era The Pharaoh's Curse (1957) and Curse of the Faceless Man (1958)

11 - UNDER THE HAMMER
Kharis returns and this time he's in technicolor! In this episode, Mr Jim Moon charts the rise of Hammer horror and how Britain's most bloodsoaked studio made a deal with Universal to bring tone of their famous monsters back from the tomb! The result was The Mummy (1959), a classic gothic horror starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing!

12 - THE CURSED TOMB
In this chapter of our history of bandaged ghouls, we begin to unwrap the 1960s and look in-depth at the second movie in Hammer's Mummy cycle - Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964)!

13 - SHROUDBUSTING
In this chapter of Mysteries of the Mummy we continue our shamble through the 1960s, looking at several highly dubious movies featuring low rent mummies before examining our main feature The Mummy's Shroud (1966) from Hammer!

14 - THE QUEEN OF TERROR
In this episode we round up the last mummies lurking in the 1960s, including the Paul Naschy monster rally Assignment Terror, before beginning the 1970s with the last of the Hammer mummy movies - Blood From the Mummy's Tomb!
